The packaging is the now-usual Marvel Minimates box as seen in the last few waves. It features the Marvel Universe logo and also has the faces on the side of the box. I really like the dynamic pose of the 2 figures in this set, it really shows them off well.

The figures are packed in a bubble tray, and have no twist-ties holding them in. Instead, a second clear tray piece fits over the top and then locks in, meaning that these figures are held in well and can be seen from each side.

There have been a LOT of Spider-Man variants in the Marvel Minimates line to date, but you can’t really class Spider-Man 2099 along with them. All the other variants are Peter Parker as Spider-Man, but in 2099 the blue and red costume is worn by scientist Miguel O’Hara, in a short lived comic book series “Spider-Man 2099”.

The mask is great. It’s very simple, but effective. The red outline of the “eyes” turn into a version of the old Spider-Man symbol, with the spider-legs. The almost skull-like design on the chest is also superb, well detailed with black outlines. The arms also have a red stripe down them. But that’s all you get. It has none of the black/shadow detailing lines that Silver Surfer or Iron Man (for example) have to break up their wide areas of single colour. In fact, the lower half has no paint apps or detailing whatsoever, and neither does the back. I think it would have looked better with slightly more detail, it looks a bit plain. Even a few thin black lines on the legs or some muscular detailing on the back would have broken up the blue somewhat.

Spider-Man 2099 comes with no accessories. The comic book character has long talons and a cape, examples of which we have seen before in the Minimate world, yet this figure comes with neither. The fact that Spider-Man 2099 was a late replacement for Thanos, who was originally scheduled to be in wave 7 with Silver Surfer might have something to do with this lack of accessories. There may have been less time to create him.

Overall, this is a bare-bones Minimate, both in the small amount of detail/paint apps and lack of accessories, and some people will be disappointed by this. However I really like the 2099 design, and the simplicity of the figure works for me.

The Silver Surfer, herald of Galactus, Devourer of Worlds, is the only figure in this exclusive pack. He has an angry expression on his face, which is picked out in white and black paint on top of his totally silver look. The paint app looks a bit haphazard – mainly around the mouth, and also with a huge splodge of white on the back of his head – but I think that’s how it’s supposed to be.

The upper body of the Silver Surfer is very detailed yet quite simple. He has a silver finish, and the muscular detailing is picked out in black and white highlights. The arms also get some detailing too. This style of detailing also applies to his legs as well, meaning that although he is predominantly silver, he is not by any means plain silver.

The Silver Surfer comes with his surfboard, which he can obviously stand on, and also hold in his hands. Sadly there are no footpegs or anything to hold the Surfer in place when he is on the surfboard, which limits how cool the accessory is.

Overall, this figure does something really different to all the existing Minimates, he looks great, the silver paint job works well, and you get his surfboard accessory too. The drawback that you can’t fix him to the surfboard is more than just a minor criticism, but the figure is too cool to let that get in the way of being a fantastic Minimate.
