DC Minimates wave 5 is a very eclectic collection. There are some famous characters in the set but most will only be known to diehard comic fans. This set contains Red Tornado and Ma Hunkel, one of whom is a B-List DC character and one is…oooh, F-List at least!
After Playalong/Art Asylum’s “Minimates with building blocks” attempts in the ill-fated C3 range, DC Direct decided to snap up the licence, bringing us 2-packs of Minimates a la Marvel, but with no chase figures. 8 waves were produced in all.

Red Tornado
This is a very faithful rendition of Red Tornado, all of his costume elements are present and correct. The face is a bit bland but what can you expect from an android?
Detailing is fairly crisp, particularly on the yellow ‘T’ on the chest piece, though is somewhat spoiled on the legs by being applied over the the sections where the legs are glued together. The cape is a nice piece and is very nicely decorated. I’m impressed that DCD haven’t cut corners and have made sure the inside of the cape is blue as well as the outside. The only downside is that the high collar on the cape restricts head movement and therefore detracts from any play value. The only other non-standard Minimate parts are the ‘buccaneer’ style boot pieces.
Red Tornado has no accessories.
In Conclusion: Nicely executed but not too exciting
Oh boy! You have to tip your hat to DCD’s policy of mixing up the character selection with some b and c list characters, but come on… Ma Hunkel! She doesn’t even get in the alphabet. Historically she was the first Red Tornado but the title was more to do with her fighting prowess as she has no super power to speak of.
So this Red Tornado wears a full face mask that looks a bit like a cooking pot but with eye holes cut out of it. That’s because it’s a cooking pot with eyeholes cut out of it. It’s a very nice cooking pot. You could probably get a nice stew going in it, but as superhero headgear it’s a bit rubbish. Remove the cooking pot and the face of a dumpy middle aged lady is revealed. She has one eyebrow arched, not really sure why… Maybe she doesn’t like being called Dumpy? There’s a hairpiece included with this ‘mate that gives Ma a very quiffalicious 50’s era hairstyle. It doesn’t improve matters.
Ma’s costume is a very busy hodgepodge of clashing reds, yellows and green that doesn’t go together on any planet. That’s fine as that’s how she appeared but it doesn’t make for a very appealing ‘mate, and there are a few minor but irritating niggles in the paint apps all over the figure.
Ma Hunkel has no accessories barring the alternate hairpiece.
In conclusion: Not a Minimate anyone was ever crying out for. It’s probably character selections like Ma Hunkel that have led DC Direct to suspend their Minimate program. A crying shame.
