In 2011 Toys R Us got a wave of exclusive PlayStation minimate sets. Ratchet & Clank was one of the PlayStation console exclusive series that got the minimate treatment. This odd pair has some wild sci-fi adventures but are these figures as memorable as the game’s characters? Read on to find out…

Packaging

The packaging is the blister card pack showcasing the figures and accessories. The pack has an insert with the Ratchet & Clank logo with headshots of the two characters. The back shows an action shot with the video game characters with short bio of each of the two characters included. The TRU exclusive sticker is on the front along with the PlayStation Official Licensed Product sticker.

The Figures

Ratchet

I can’t say that I know exactly what a Lombax is and I’ve only played the Ratchet & Clank games a handful of times; but I still find these characters quite charming and a lot of fun. Ratchet is a Lombax mechanic who, along with his sidekick, travels through the universe to fight the forces of evil.

You’ll notice Ratchet’s head is larger than normal using a 2 1/2 inch base. He has large distinctive eyes, grin and *gasp* a nose. His hairpiece has large sculpted ears and cool headgear. The colors are nice/bright and fairly even, the only problem I noticed is the paint apps are a little splotchy; too thin in some areas and too thick in others.

The rest of the body is regular 2 inch base with some nice details on his torso and arms. I really like the torso cover straps with the little bolt in the back. Even better is the mini-Clank that fits into the hole so Ratchet can carry him with, just like the game.  He has a belt cover with attached tail. Rounding out the outfit are large brown gloves and large very detailed boots

Coming from a game known for some interesting weapon contraptions you would expect some good accessories. As noted before there is a backpack mode Clank that is just too cute (my daughter has claimed this accessory since I opened the pack). And what good mechanic would be without his trusty OmniWrench 8000. And to battle evil you have to have a weapon so he comes with a orange/silver colored Combuster. All very interesting and one of a kind minimate accessories.  Ratchet is great custom fodder too. If it wasn’t for Hope having a jetpack I would have suggested the mini-Clank with harness as a perfect start for one.

Overall Ratchet is a fun figure and a welcome addition to the minimate line.

Clank

Ratchet’s trusty sidekick Clank is always ready to give Ratchet a much needed boost to help stop the forces of evil. This is his full robot size form and is a new innovation in minimate design.

His base body (torso, arms & legs) are a basic black blank with one little exception. His legs are actually arms on a smaller waist piece. It’s such a simple swap that surprised we haven’t seen it before. This change shortens the body, gives him a smaller frame and a more robot-like appearance. Also notice the little silver joint details on his shoulders.

Clank’s face has these huge green orb eyes that look great and love the little screw details at corners of his mouth. He has a little black antenna hairpiece with red top. His paint apps are top notch and I’ve always liked this metallic silver color.

He has a blocky torso cover with details for the rivets, vents and even his little bolt backpack connector on his back. He has new sculpted hands and feet that even have little sculpted details for the joints and screws. There’s a slight amount of paint bleeding to the fingers but that’s a minor gripe.

No accessories are included for him.  Clank’s another character that makes for great custom fodder.  Just the new idea to use arms as legs should help to create shorter characters.
