Marvel Minimates waves 17 and 18 feature characters from 2007’s summer blockbuster Spider-Man 3, sadly these Minimates were released too late to cash in on the hoopla from either the movie or DVD release. Here we have a pack containing two civilian versions of characters, Peter Parker and his photographer adversary Eddie Brock.

Packaging

All the Spider-Man 3 Minimates in both waves 17 and 18 share a common design theme. A warped, blue tinted New York Skyline with the figures superimposed in front. The side flaps feature larger pictures of the Minimates while the back has a nice big ‘family’ portrait along with a whole slew of trademark logos and legal indicia.

The Figures

Peter Parker (Spider-Man 3)

PeterParker1

It’s EMO PETE! This version of Peter is based on how he looked while under the influence of the symbiote costume. It made (in my opinion) for a very boring segment of the movie. Let’s see how it makes out as a ‘mate.

PeterParker2

First off there’s not a whole lot of Tobey Maguire going on here. Well not that I can see anyway. The hair is very much like the way Peter wore his hair during the ‘black costume’ part of the film and I suppose the expression gives off a certain petulant arrogance but it’s neither Tobey Maguire nor Peter Parker.

I do like the jacket piece that’s been made for the figure. Just the way that it’s fastened at the base makes it very different to what we’ve seen before and I’m sure it’s going to surface on lots of custom ‘civilian’ type figures. Under the jacket is a hint of that nasty evil black costume. The pattern continues all over the front of the chest block but sadly not the back. I’d imagine that’s a cost issue but it is a shame that the whole chest block doesn’t carry the print. The rest of the outfit is predictable dull. Blue jeans, and black shoes (doesn’t he realise that only brown shoes work with jeans?) finish the ensemble.

Peter Parker has no accessories. A camera would have been nice.

In conclusion, some nice touches but a tad dull.

Eddie Brock (Spider-Man 3)

EddieBrock1

Eddie Brock, Peter’s rival shutterbug at the Daily Bugle will stop at nothing to get his picture. Nothing.

EddieBrock2

Considering this wave of ‘mates is based on a movie property this is an awfully cartoony-looking Eddie Brock. The bright yellow hair and simple facial expression do not suggest Eddie Brock actor Topher Grace in any way shape or form. I can’t say I’m all that impressed with the big black mark over his left eye either. It doesn’t appear on the promo figure and I do wonder if it’s a production glitch on my figure or if the entire run sports this blemish? Regardless it looks wrong. (It’s intentional, it does appear in some of the packaging shots on the box as well as on my version of the figure – Ed)

EddieBrock3

Eddie is dressed in a fairly ordinary everyday clothes which doesn’t make for too dynamic a figure. The chest block jacket is a new piece which is supposed to resemble Eddie’s leather. Underneath that is a shirt and tie which, while nothing to write home about has actually been handled really well. The check pattern of the shirt isn’t simple crosshatch lines, rather it moves around the chest block suggesting that it’s following the contours of the body underneath. The red and white spotty tie offers a contrast to the shirt and considering the scale of a Minimate is very well detailed indeed. Still it says something when all you can write about a Minimate is that it has a nice tie! Eddie’s outfit is finished off with green trousers and black shoes.

Eddie Brock is accessorised with a camera, which seems to be slightly small in this scale.

In conclusion, a dull figure.
