One of two exclusive sets for this Fantastic 4 themed TRU Wave 8 . Will these be some fresh reviews or will they turn out fishy? More to follow ..
Packaging
The packaging is the standard window box with control art below the windows. The sides have individual picture of the two figures. On the back are the mini-bios of each character along with group picture of all figures in this wave. The silver “TRU exclusive” foil mark is also on the front.
The Figures
Namor
Namor is the mutant son of a human sea captain and of a princess of Atlantis. He’s the first comic antihero and has been a part of the Avengers, Fantastic Four, the Invaders and the X-Men. Namor has appeared in Minimate form several times before, in the Defenders and the Invaders box sets.
Namor has an intense concerned look on his face, in fact it is right between the scowl he has from the Defenders set and the angry teeth bared look from the Invaders set. His hair is a reissue of the same flat black hair he’s been sporting in the last two figures.
This time around he’s wearing his black and gold outfit. The shirt is open showing some chest detail along with good color contrast on his shirt highlighting muscle detail. The bottom of front torso is his gold belt with trident symbol. The paint overall is very crisp and clean. The sides and back of the torso along with the crotch, legs and feet are all black.
To augment his costume there are several accessories that work very well for him. First we have the gold shoulder pads, which on my figure keep shifting forward, but look much better than using a torso cover like the Defenders Namor. His bracelets have more sculpt detail than previously with the two ridges. And he has the same winged foot pieces from the Defenders Namor. New to this figure is his corrugated wings/cape. Visually they look very nice but mine the armbands kept sliding down, making it a little difficult for posing.
For accessories we finally get his trident. Missing from the previous sets with this character, this is a nice inclusion for this set. It is a reissue of the one included with Ocean Master.
In conclusion, this is the best and most complete release of this character so far. Good detail and a good amount of accessories.
MMC Score – 8 out of 10
Atlantean Soldier
I have to admit I don’t know a whole lot about the kingdom of Atlantis from the comics, so the most I know about this figure is that he is one of the guards for Namor/Atlantis. This is the first appearance of this figure in minimate form.
He as a stoic look on his face with blank white eyes. There are two block patterns on the forehead along with similar patterns on the torso, I’m not sure what these are for but it does give a cool effect to the design. There are two options for headpieces: gold helmet with black ruffle (repaint of Ares helmet) and a black hairpiece (modification of one from Lobo). Both work well and you can still see the eyes and face detail.
The torso has the some muscle detail along with the block patterns. But what really stands out is the powder blue color of the torso, arms and hands; this really pops against the gold color of his armor. The feet, legs and crotch are black with a little bit of light grey paint detail where his front zipper/belt would be.
He has the same wrist bracelets seen from Lady Loki and a repaint of the torso armor from Ares. For accessories he has a shield (repaint of one from Hawkman) with the trident logo on it. Also included is a futuristic large gun (same seen in Retro X-Force Cable set).
It’s worth noting that, as discussed on the MMV, if you have an extra sash from a Modern Mandarin and boots from Lady Loki, they work perfectly on this figure. The colors match and really complete the costume.
In conclusion, this is a surprisingly good figure, especially for an army builder one. Good detail/accessories and great color really make this one stand out.
