No change in the shape of the packaging since the last wave but it’s a lot brighter. Wave 19’s packaging shares the same dark blue/light blue colour scheme and features character art work behind the photographs of the Minimates. Both characters seem to be posed in action stances though Ultron is looking a lot more pro-active than Ms Marvel.

The back of the box has a group shot of the characters in this wave as well as a nice big Minimates logo above them. There’s also the usual biography boxes explaining who the characters are and what their powers they have. Quite useful for people who may not know what characters they’re buying.

A 1970s character that has spent much of recent Marvel continuity as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Thankfully Brian Michael Bendis plucked her from relative obscurity and re-introduced her as one of the powerhouses of the Marvel Universe. I say thankfully because when rendered by the right artist she’s extremely easy on the eye.

Not a bad face on this ‘mate. It’s really quite a simple one – a domino mask, a hint of cheekbone, and a slightly sardonic smile. It doesn’t quite portray the blonde bombshell that Carol Danvers can be, but it’s not at all bad. The hairpiece is the same as can be found on a plethora of female Marvel ‘mates and I’m sick of it. Retire it DST. It’s served its purpose, let’s all move on OK?

Ms Marvel’s costume is nicely done. It’s a simple dark grey (or black, I can’t decide) bodysuit with a lightning flash insignia, and red sash at the waist. It also has shoulder length gloves, and thigh high boots. It’s perfectly captured in ‘mate form and does stand out quite nicely when displayed with a bunch of other ‘mates. There are some nice touches of ‘light’ reflection on the costume and a very subtle print of Ms. Marvel’s figure on the chest block. It’s nice to see some texture on the back of the chest block too, especially as it’s mostly hidden by the hairpiece.

Ms. Marvel has no accessories.

In conclusion: Very decent looking Minimate, yet missing that ‘spark’ that truly captures the character.

One of the Avengers big foes. It’s good to see more villains being produced in the Marvel line. Ultron is a fully sentient robot created by Hank Pym (Ant-Man, Giant-Man, Yellowjacket, etc) who rebelled against his creator and continually improves himself and returns to take over the world, generally being thwarted by the Avengers.

This is such a cool looking ‘mate. Ultron’s head is a slip over piece that is placed over a translucent red plastic head. This is very effective when placed against a light source as Ultron’s eyes and mouth are lit by a red glow. Unfortunately a large panel has been removed from the rear of the head to allow the light to enter. Still, how often do you look at the back of your ‘mates? Ultron’s face itself has an expression of pure evil as is only fitting for a villain of its calibre. The only downside to the design is the limited movement to the head, it can only turn from side to side, which is a great shame.

The rest of Ultron is a fairly simple silver body. That’s not to say it’s bad. Just that it’s uncluttered. There’s no musculature involved, just black ‘reflection lines and lines to illustrate the various joins on Ultron’s body.

Ultron is accessorised with two ‘energy’ effects that slip over his hands. They’re very similar to the piece that came with Civil War Nitro (unless you’re me) and are very effective as they give Ultron the appearance of readying some major whoopass on an unsuspecting super-type.

In conclusion: The absolute essence of Ultron has been distilled and processed by mateyfication. Yes Danny, it is a word. It absolutely is!
