Mr. Fantastic & First Appearance Dr. Doom – TRU: Wave 8

Another TRU wave 8 set with two characters we’ve seen released before but updated and better than ever. DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

Packaging

The packaging is the standard window box with control art below the windows. The sides have individual picture of the two figures. On the back are the mini-bios of each character along with group picture of all figures in this wave.

The Figures

Mr. Fantastic

Reed Richards (also known as Mr. Fantastic) is one of the founding members of the Fantastic Four. He got his powers from being exposed to a cosmic storm and has the ability to make himself stretch to great lengths. This is the fourth iteration of this character in minimate form. This one fits the color scheme and detail of the rest of the F4 group in this wave.

He has a good amount of facial detail with a “thinker” expression. His eyes are not as bright blue as in prior versions. His hair is its normal brown with grey sides, although this hair seems a lot shinier than the one from the Stretch Attack figure.

The torso has more defined chest and stomach detail along with the F4 logo. The arms/legs have the standard blue and with black hands/feet. No bulky gloves this time around.

As an accessory he has his stretch attack base; the same base from the Stretch Attack figure. While I don’t mind the updates to the costume/detail, it would have been nice if they could have kept the same shade blue they had used in prior versions so we could mix and match pieces from other figures better.

In conclusion, this is the good version of Reed. If they could have used the Stretch Attack figure’s hair and the same color blue (for this entire wave) he’d be about perfect.

First Appearance Dr. Doom

Victor Von Doom (aka Dr. Doom), ruler of Latveria, scourge of the Fantastic Four. This version is as he first appeared in the comics (hold on, isn’t he kind of green faced on the cover of Fantastic Four #5 … oh well).

This is Doom’s fifth version to date. Like previous versions we get the iconic Doom mask head, this one does a great job with balance of detail/simplicity (not too much, not too little, just perfect). But as a bonus it comes with another head with his scared face so we don’t have to buy a separate figure like the chase set of old; nice touch! The extra head has good detail as you can see the marks on his face, furrowed brow and smirk. There’s also the green hood (reuse of Moon Knight’s hood) to cover his head.

He has a similar green outfit as before but this time his arms and legs are green instead of silver. There is an added dark green neck piece (same one used for the Skrulls). However what is nice is if you remove the neckpiece you’ll notice the torso piece has a painted neckpiece underneath (also on the back). This is a nice touch and also makes a good base for a Toad custom.

Doom has silver hands with silver armbands. Also this go around his feet have the pad that extend up in the front for his metal boot look. He does have a skirt like before (dare I say Doom’s wearing a skirt, I know it’s part of his outfit, but come on, it’s a friggin skirt) but this time it’s shorter to allow for his leg holster.

Speaking of accessories, he has a leg holster along with a grey handgun.

In conclusion, this is a good version of Doom and pulls off the First Appearance look well. I like the metal arms/legs look better but the extras that this set includes for him makes him stand out.
