Two more New Mutants to join the minimate ranks in a preview of the upcoming Toys R Us exclusive for wave 13.

Packaging

The box is the new expanded window box so you can see both characters along with the accessories in the middle. The character names and control art bust shots are below the windows. The sides have individual control art of each character. On the back are the mini-bios of each character along with group picture of all figures in this wave. The silver “TRU exclusive” foil mark is also on the front.

The Figures

Mirage

Mirage, probably better known as Danielle Moonstar, has the ability to create illusions of her enemy’s fears or wishes. She was member and co-leader of the New Mutants and for a time was part of X-Force.

What’s really nice about the New Mutant minimates that have been released is the consistency of their outfits. With the exception of those characters that are “powered up” they all have the same yellow/black with navy blue highlighted jumpsuits. I don’t have all the characters so I can’t show you the whole crew together but be sure to check out the forum as others have shown off their group pics.

She has soft facial features and a well-done new hairpiece with double braids in the back. Mirage has a few changes to her outfit to set her apart from other team members. First off, her gloves are two separate pieces (regular hands and cuffs) instead of one glove piece and her brown moccasin boots are painted on the base legs/feet rather than separate boots. I like the details of the boot ties on the side. Another nice feature is along with the regular New Mutant red belt she also comes with her signature blue moonstone belt.

For accessories she comes with a spear, bow and arrow. You’ll notice the bow has a little c hook on the handle that the arrow can fit onto. It’s a simple addition but really adds a lot to the playability of the figure.

If you’re a New Mutant fan then you’ll definitely want to add Mirage to your collection. Even if you’re not she is a well done figure.

Magma

Amara Juliana Olivians Aquilla is from a lost society in the Amazon called Nova Roma and she has the mutant ability to create lava. When she joined the New Mutants she became known as Magma. And, in a good job of pairing the 2-packs, it was Mirage that helped get Amara to seek help from Professor X to learn to control her powers.

Magma is powered up so she doesn’t have on the regular New Mutant outfit. Instead she is done entirely in a translucent yellow/orange color. The details for her face and torso stand out well and all over she has red lines to give that flowing lava feel; nicely done.

I can’t tell if her hairpiece is new or not but it’s done in the same translucent color. She comes with a base reused from Nova and unless I’m missing something it doesn’t fit into her hair like Nova’s. Instead it can be used as a really tall blast base and looks really cool. Magma also comes with two hands blasts.  Even if you don’t need her to add to your New Mutant team she can be used as a great base for other fiery characters.

In conclusion it’s always fun to have another translucent figure.
