Another Toys R Us wave 18 set features a powerful hero and villain.  We’ve seen other versions of each character before, so let’s see how these updates stack up.

Packaging

mnTAM01

The box is the expanded window box so you can see both characters along with the accessories in the middle. The character names and control art bust shots are below the windows. The sides have individual control art of each character. On the back are the mini-bios of each character along with group picture of all figures in this wave.

The Figures

Marvel Now Thor

We’ve seen several other heroes in their updated Marvel Now outfits so now it’s Thor’s turn. To me he looks a lot like his Thor Reborn figure (something with the forehead point of his helmet).

So let’s start with his helmet; I like it. On some of Thor’s other figures his eyes seem set too low; not the case here. You also have to love the grumpy cat expression he’s sporting too.

They can keep reusing that cape because it still looks great. He has a fair amount of detail on his torso, the silver discs stand out well and he has a well sculpted waist-piece, boots and bracelets. I’m glad they included a spare set of arms for a fully armored look as they match nicely with his legs.
mnTAM05
For an accessory he comes with his trusty hammer Mjolnir. I feel kinda spoiled with other Thor releases that come with his spinning hammer accessory; it’s such a great piece you want it for every Thor figure. He also comes with a clear base stand. Since his costume is fairly consistent he’s a good figure to mix and match with other Thors to get just the right look that you want. Feel free to put his headpiece on other characters, add a grumpy cat meme and post it on the forum.

He’s a good figure, not my favorite but still a nice Thor to add to the collection.

Absorbing Man

I remember him being more of a Hulk villain than one of Thor’s foes but it was Loki’s doing that turned boxer Carl “Crusher” Creel into the Absorbing Man (then again I read more Hulk comics than Thor ones). We also saw him in minimate form way way back in Marvel wave 5; so yeah he needed an update.

And boy did they nail this update! Simple basic minimate head (no head hole) with a nicely detailed face. He is pretty much two figures in one with all the extra pieces included. He has a powerhouse torso piece (the good one that still allows full arm movement) where you can see his elemental transformation happening. I’m trying to figure out what element this is going for as I’m guessing it’s wood with the little grain textures that continue down his arm; could be clay instead but I’ll go with wood. The top part of his left arm is a sculpted brown piece and he has a massive clawed hand. On his right side you have Thing’s shoulder pad and rock hand with a skin tone to grey color fade. For added bulk he has a torso riser with bulky waist and thigh covers along with big boot feet. You can see his left foot changing to a metal elemental color.

Thankfully DST gave you what’s underneath as well with extra pieces to give you the slimmed down regular Carl in his striped prison pants by included spare arms, hands, waist and feet. Two figures in one!

They even updated his ball and chain accessory to an awesome looking curved chain with cracked ball accessory piece. The only thing I could want would be more elemental pieces but you can add to the fun by mixing and matching other elemental pieces (Thing hands/feet, Nul’s hands, etc) to have him transforming into whatever element you want.

This is an outstanding upgrade especially for a character that lends itself to minimates’ interchangeability !
