These sets, just like when the teasers for the X-Men: First Class movie first came out, you couldn’t quite tell how it would really turn out. Was it going to be a dud or a diamond in the ruff? Well, like the movie, these sets are much better than expected.
Packaging
The packaging is the standard window box with control art below the windows. The sides have individual picture of the two figures. On the back is a mini-plot of the X-Men: First Class movie along with group picture of all figures in this wave. The front has the X-Men: FC movie logo along with the silver “TRU exclusive” foil mark.
The Figures
Magneto
X-Men: First Class serves as a prequel to the X-Men movies that had been release in 2000 – 2006. These were the days when Erik Lensherr and Charles Xavier first met. Magneto was played brilliantly in this movie by Michael Fassbender.
Great facial expression on this one, it really nails his look in the movie. Good strong details on the tampo, it really stands out. I would have rather seen a bit more of a scowl, but that’s a very minor gripe. He has a decent hairpiece (fits the character well) along with the helmet he acquires in the movie. The helmet is a repaint of the one seen from AoA Magneto. I really love how the M stands out in the back.
The rest of the figure is a base minimate body painted with the flight jumpsuit worn at the end of the movie. Honestly when I first saw the promo pictures for this series with the jumpsuits I was not that impressed. But seeing them in person they look really good. The paint apps are superb, very crisp lines with lots of detail on the front, back, arms and legs. The only additional piece is the belt which even though it is kinda bulky compared to the rest of the figure it does add to the jumpsuit look. Simplicity in design with impressive details, just like the movie.
There are no extra accessories, besides the extra helmet. The good thing about the jumpsuit look is it allows for simple head swaps to round out the rest of the movie’s cast that didn’t make it to minimate form (Banshee, Moira).
In conclusion, a great example of well executed details on a simple base body.
Mystique and Xavier as childhood friends; quite an interesting twist on their backstory. She was well played by Jennifer Lawrence. Instead of going for the full body blue we saw in the previous X-Men movies, this Mystique has yet to embrace her mutant beauty.
Mystique has her red short cut hair and a blue head with nice facial details. Her body is similar to Magneto, just the base minimate with the jumpsuit design. She’s missing the one horizontal buckle on the front and back but her shirt is zipped down a bit to show more of her blue skin. She also has some yellow further down the top of her arms. Same as before superb paint apps, very crisp lines with lots of detail. I would have skipped the extra belt piece and just had the belt design on her waist piece to give her a slim look. Other than that, it matches great to the movie version.
No accessories for Mystique. Same as with Magneto the jumpsuit allows for quick head swap to create another team member. Just need to paint over that bit of blue skin showing.
Another good figure to add to your XMFC lineup.
