No stranger to picking up specific Marvel film licenses, this wave of DST’s Minimates were released to hit the stores ready for May 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie, and featured a Wolverine in every set, plus some supporting characters from the film. The variant set for the wave featured another version of Sabretooth, this time in Special Ops attire from the key flashback in the film. Logan, the other figure in this set, has already been reviewed. For those wondering why the variant doesn’t come with an army builder figure – an idea first seen in the last Marvel wave, and continued in wave 27 onwards – I guess the movie didn’t really have any meaningful ones.

Packaging

Wave 26 packaging remains the same as previous waves, however the look is much more understated with the black packaging. The legend “Variant” is prominent on the right hand side of the front.

The back of the box has the whole wave pictured, and the bio boxes are still present, hinting at plot developments in the film without giving too much away.

The Figure

Special Ops Sabretooth

Here we get another version of Sabretooth. The bright side is that it wasn’t another Wolverine! At least this figure will fit with many of the others in this wave, being part of the special ops team flashback.

Special Ops Sabretooth has a much calmer look on his face than the original version in this wave, where he was snarling. Again, it is a good likeness to Liev Schreiber. The hairpiece is reused from the first Sabretooth, which is an understandable reuse.

Special Ops Sabretooth is geared up for battle, sporting a vaguely military uniform with a unique chest piece containing lots of sculpted details such as canteens and holsters. We don’t usually see much in the way of unique pieces when it comes to variant figures so fair play to DST for the effort.

Sabretooth gets the same claw-taloned hands as the original. This time these have been finished in silver rather than being “bone” colored, and the difference to how they look is immense. They look much more threatening on this version of the figure. Sabretooth also gets the ubiquitous (for this wave) M-16 rifle. Again, he can’t hold it particularly well but it’s always good to get something useful.

In conclusion, Special Ops Sabretooth fits in pretty nicely with the other Minimates taken from the Special Ops flashback – Special Ops Wolverine, Deadpool and Blob – but he’s hardly an essential version to get. The trench coat look is the one he sports most throughout the film, meaning this variant is pretty much expendable.

MMC Score – 5 out of 10
