Another classic Universal monster film comes alive in minimate form. So is this set destined to be a classic or will it roam the halls gathering dust? Well you’d have to be wrapped in linen and locked in a tomb to not see how grea… Oh, never mind. Just scroll on …
Packaging
The packaging is the blister card pack showcasing the figures and accessories. The pack has an insert with the Universal Monster’s logo . The back shows the other figures available in the series with short bio of each of the two characters included.
The Figures
Imhotep (aka The Mummy)
The 1932 film The Mummy is a true classic with Boris Karloff as the mummified Imhotep. If you like monster films at all then this is a definite must see. Simple but amazing film and Karloff is incredible as always. In the film Imhotep is accidently revived by archaeologists and he sets out in search of his ancient love, Princess Ankh-es-en-amon.
There’s honestly not a lot to this figure. It’s a simple minimate body with some details. But oh my goodness the details are amazing!! His face is hands down the best details I’ve ever seen on a minimate face. Look at it! Seriously go back and look at it again, it’s incredible! That looks just like Karloff. They did a good job in the last wave with Frankenstein’s Monster but this is even better. The crevices, the deep set eyes, even his white gnarly hair is top notch.
Since this is the color version his skin has a slight grey/blue tint and his body is closer to a tan color. They did a great job on the details showing the wrapped linen all around his mummified body. These details continue on his arms and legs. Also on his right hand he has a sculpted blue ring; that’s a nice touch.
No extra accessories included but technically the second figure is an accessory made just for him. He also is the perfect base (even better than Mumm-Ra) for a Mummy army.
I don’t think this character could be made any more perfect unless he came with a sarcophagus; oh wait, he does!
Every Vampire needs his coffin and every Mummy needs his sarcophagus. Now I know this is packaged like a second character but it’s really an extra-large accessory for Imhotep. There’s no articulation (well it does open and close) and no base minimate body.
On the front you see a sculpted minimate head with folded minimate arms in a pose you’d see in typical Egyptian relics. The colors are bright and rustic and the amount of sculpted detail in this is simply stunning. Great textures and designs all over. This piece also shows that ancient minimates had ears, lol.
The sculpting continues on the sides and on the back there’s a worn rocky surface. The front piece comes off to reveal open space to perfectly fit a resting mummy. What’s also nice the flatness of the sarcophagus “feet” allows you to position it upright without tipping over.
Best accessory ever! This is an outstanding 2-pack; I can’t say enough good things about it. This set should be a sell-out. It’s perfect for anyone that likes monsters, perfect for Halloween displays, perfect for a fall festival prizes, perfect for toy collectors of all ages. If I could I’d hand them out instead of candy for Trick-or-Treating.
