The 2008 movie ‘The Incredible Hulk’ was supposed to be a reboot of the Hulk franchise after the lukewarm reception, and indeed box office takings, of Ang Lee’s 2005 ‘Hulk’. The 22nd wave of Marvel Minimates is based upon the characters as depicted in ‘The Incredible Hulk’ movie. Character-wise, this set is a repeat of one of the very first Marvel Minimates sets, the Hulk and Bruce Banner set in wave 1.

Packaging

Standard Marvel Minimate packaging comprising of the familiar carton with J-hook. The hook section of the pack carries the usual logos. The sloped section has the Hulk logo, and the front of the carton features waist up photographs of the Minimates themselves. The side flaps also feature photographs of the ‘mates, one to each side.

The back of the pack features the ubiquitous group shot of the entire wave. Like the Iron Man movie packaging, the biography boxes are missing from this wave. Must be a movie thing.

The Figures

Hulk (The Incredible Hulk)

MovieHulk1

Okay, I’ll say it now. I hate this Minimate!

I don’t like the sculpt of the hairpiece – it’s too much of a bowl cut.

I don’t like the expression on the face – it’s grumpy, where it should be enraged.

MovieHulk2

I don’t like the oversized chest block – it’s an entirely different shade of green to the rest of the figure. I also don’t like it because it looks unfinished at the bottom, the detailing seems to just stop before it should.

I don’t like the duck feet because, well, they’re the duck feet and every time they are used, the results are terrible. The alternative feet are alright, I suppose.

MovieHulk3

Like everyone else in this wave, the Hulk has no accessories.

In conclusion: Incredulous. If you absolutely need a Movie-style Hulk, you’d be much better off with the Battle Damaged Hulk in this wave, it’s streets ahead of this horrible, wretched figure.

Bruce Banner (The Incredible Hulk)

MovieBanner1

The other figure in this set is Bruce Banner, former scientist, now fugitive from General Ross’s Hulkbuster team.

This Minimate is not too bad a likeness of Ed Norton, but if it weren’t for the stubble I’d also say it wasn’t too bad a likeness of Bill Bixby either.

MovieBanner2

Banner’s wearing a light blue workshirt and jeans. There’s some nice detailing: I like the rolled up sleeves and just the way the shirt has been given a bit of a sloppy look by showing the shirt spilling over the T-piece on the crotch. Also a good touch – the flesh colour on the top of the chest block where the shirt is open at the neck.

However… This is just a guy. There’s nothing really exciting about this ‘mate whatsoever. It has nice feet! [Rad, you seem obsessed with Minimate feet! Are you a Minimate foot fetishist? – Ed]

Bruce Banner has no accessories.

In conclusion: Puny Banner.
