Here we have a pack containing New Cyclops, and Wave 9’s chase figure, Emma Frost, who is a variant of the White Queen. As I have already reviewed New Cyclops this review will concentrate only on Emma Frost.
Packaging
The packaging features the Marvel Universe logo and the chase figure is clearly identified, with a “VARIANT ENCLOSED” banner on the corner of the box front.
The figures are packed in a bubble tray, and have no twist-ties holding them in. Instead, a second clear tray piece fits over the top and then locks in, meaning that these figures are held in well and can be seen from each side.
The back of the packaging is new and only shows waves 8 and 9.
The Figure
Emma Frost
Here we have our second clear chase figure in as many waves following wave 8’s Invisible Woman, and just like that figure, this one tries to do something more than just be a clear variant. Whilst the Minimate is cast in clear plastic, the White Queen costume has been painted on over the top, meaning that only her flesh is clear. This is to simulate Emma Frost’s diamond form, her “secondary mutation”, a concept brought in by Grant Morrison during New X-Men to allow him to change established characters.
The head block and hairpiece are both completely clear, and this time Emma sports an even more sassy grin than previously. As a new figure, Emma has the hole in the head block and the pegged hairpiece.
The costume is identical to the White Queen, but sadly the paint job isn’t quite as good, with some of the areas that should be white still being clear around the edges, most noticibly on the crotch piece. The black outlining on the cloak clasp also appears smudged.
Like the White Queen, Emma Frost has no accessories except for the C3 feet.
Overall, this is good idea for a variant but doesn’t really work as well as previous clear Minimates. I prefer the White Queen to this chase figure.
MMC Score – 6 out of 10
