For the 50th wave of Marvel minimates, DST did something special and let the fans choose from a selection of characters/versions to make up the wave. So did we pick wisely? Let’s check out this set of a much requested heroine and a uniquely dressed Spidey and find out.
Packaging
The box is the expanded window box so you can see both characters along with the accessories in the middle. The character names and control art bust shots are below the windows. The sides have individual control art of each character. On the back are the mini-bios of each character along with group picture of all figures in this wave.
The Figures
Cyborg Spider-Man
You got to admit, the 90’s were dope! When else would you get a web crawler dressed up like this? Fresh off a massive beat down by the Sinister Six, Dr Oscar McDonnell fixed Spidey up with cybernetic arm, stiches and a new eye piece. Looks a bit like Deathlok doesn’t he; well he was in that comic too.
They created a nice new headpiece for his eye piece. Thankfully it doesn’t have a head peg but rather fits snug around his head however it’s still removable. Underneath you can see Spider-Man’s cracked eye lens. The only drawbacks with his facial details are the weblines feel a bit off center and you can still see the webbing under his white eyes.
Rest of his body is well detailed. I love the little stiches here and there on him. He comes with a well nice belt with tons of little pockets all the way around and a band for around his thigh. The big draw is that left cybernetic arm of his. This is a great piece and one I truly hope they use for Cable next time he’s done in minimate form.
As a bonus they’ve included a spare regular left Spidey arm. Perfect for displaying him in a battle damaged form. Out of all the battle damaged Spider-Man versions we’ve seen so far, this is by far my favorite! Besides the extra arm he’s included with a clear base plate. For customizers he’s a great figure to have. The belt, arm, band and eye patch are easy to reuse on other figures.
In conclusion, he’s not perfect. A few corrections with the paint and details and he could have been perfect but he’s definitely a must have for fans of Spider-Man.
To be honest I had never heard of Songbird before the fan poll. Here’s her bio: Melissa Gold was once known as Screaming Mimi, a sonic-powered member of the Masters of Evil. When the Masters pretended to be heroes as the Thunderbolts, Melissa got a new costume and a new name.
She has a nicely detailed hairpiece that curves around her shoulders in the back; the pink highlights are cleanly applied around her face. Her facial details are soft but stand out well.
She has gold shoulder armor piece that does limit arm movement but looks rather impressive. Rest of her costume is nicely detailed and the gold and blue contrast well.
As an accessory Songbird comes with her pink energy construct that in the comic allows her to fly (Klaw’s technology that allows her scream to form into a set of solid-sound wings). Similar to other flying bases we’ve seen before this one has a small piece that fits on her waist peg that has a little peg in the back that attached to a hole in the base. The good thing about these setups is it allows for the figure to pivot around and pose in varying positions. A clear base plate is also included with her.
Like I said before I wasn’t familiar with this character to begin with but she I am impressed with her in minimate form.
MMC Score – 8 out of 10
