The re-imagined Battlestar Galactica continues to wow fans and the Minimates based on the show must be doing the same as they’ve made it to a third wave. Up for review is the variant figure for this wave Chief Galen Tyrol. Once again Tyrol is packaged with Lieutenant Helo but as Helo has already been reviewed only the variant will be covered.
Packaging
The packaging is exactly the same as the previous two waves, with the obvious exception ofthe blister inserts, and the photos on the back of the card. It works really well so the fact it hasn’t changed isn’t really a problem. This set obviously has the big ‘Variant Enclosed’ sticker on the outside of the blister.
The rear of the card features same picture of the BSG cast rendered as Minimates, and photos of all the ‘mates in the wave including the variant.
The Figure
Chief Galen Tyrol
Really it should be Chief Petty Officer Galen Tyrol but that probably wouldn’t have fitted on the insert card.
It’s really hard to give this figure a decent review. I struggle to understand why DST gave us a fat bloke in a green suit as a variant? Most other DST variant Minimates stand out because they’re significantly different in a cool way, this one is significantly different in a dull way, being a simple colour change with less detail than the original!
The head’s exactly the same as Deck Chief Galen Tyrol’s head. It’s a good likeness and would have been even better if the print on Tyrol’s chin was closer to the prototypes with the dimple in the middle.
The body is just ‘meh’! There’s nothing wrong with it other than it’s green and it’s dull. At least the first Tyrol was bright and colourful amongst the ranks of the other BSG ‘mates. This one just blends in with all the other green-hued ‘mates. The NCO uniform is all present and correct, pockets in the right place, collar nice and tidy… Errrr… That’s it. I’m sorry I can’t write another word about this ‘mate. I’d rather stare at my left foot for an hour. Never noticed that vein before…
As the original Deck Chief Tyrol didn’t get any cool accessories, nor does this one.
In conclusion, zzzzzzzzzzzz. It’s not an awful ‘mate. Just an awfully weak choice of variant.
