They’re baaaack! This year’s black and white versions for the Universal Monsters line are Imhotep from The Mummy and Quasimodo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. This set is no slouch, so let’s creep on to our review.
Packaging
The packaging is the blister card pack showcasing the figures and accessories. The pack has an insert with the Universal Monster’s logo . The back shows the other figures available in the series with short bio of each of the two characters included. The TRU exclusive sticker is on the front.
The Figures
Imhotep (B&W)
Imhotep is the same exact figure from the sarcophogus set just this time done in the grey color palate. He still has the same excellent facial and body details all around. However of the two figures, I sort of like the color version better. The tan tones look more like the b&w movie colors than this version does; strange I know.
No accessories as before but the sarcophagus still fits him perfectly; so make sure you get extras of that set. He is also base for creating an army of mummies or for wrapping up other characters as a mummy (we don’t have a Mummy Spider-Man or Wolverine version yet do we?).
Not as perfect as the color version but still top mummy marks given.

Quasimodo (B&W)
I bet you didn’t know that Quasimodo and the Wolf Man were related, did you? Well the actors that played them were. Lon Chaney Sr played Quasimodo in the 1923 Universal’s film The Hunchback of Notre Dame and his son, Lon Chaney Jr, later played Larry Talbot in Universal’s 1941 The Wolf Man. The monster apple doesn’t fall far from the tree does it?
Thankfully AA went with a much tamer hairpiece than that troll doll fuzzy hair he was sporting in the film. And Quasi’s face is just as impressive as Imhotep’s; serious kudos to the design team for the character details of this line. The bushy eyebrows, scrunched face and mis-sized teeth are just how you expect the character to look.
He has a new sculpted torso cover that emphasizes his hunched back (but not so much so that he looks like Frankenstein’s Igor) and also makes him look big and powerful. I really like the details you can see of his undershirt and tattered coat. The rest of the figure is a simple dark grey blank with white hands and dark feet.
No accessories are included with him; honestly a church bell play set would have been ideal. Besides the simple base figure for customizing his torso cover would make a good addition to other characters in need of bulking up.
In conclusion, Quasi makes for another good b&w figure to add to your Universal Monsters minimate collection. Let’s hope this series does well enough that we can look forward to another series next Halloween!
