Here we have a pack containing Peter Parker and Mary Jane, which was an exclusive to the US Summer 2003 Conventions Wizard World and Comic-Con.

Packaging

The packaging features the Spider-Man logo along the side of the card. The figures are packed in a bubble tray, and have twist-ties holding them in, as well as clear elastic bands holding their arms to their sides.

The figures look pretty good in the package, the civilian garb of the 2 figures is certainly colourful and provides a good contrast. The accessories are also clearly visible.

The Figures

Peter Parker

First up, we have Peter Parker, the civilian identity of the wall-crawling Spider-Man.

Peter has a very weird “happy” smile on his face which is a world apart from most of the other Minimates. Coupled with his glasses, which were absent from the Peter Parker half of the PP/Spider-Man figure, he looks really geeky.

The outfit Peter is wearing is identical to the PP/Spidey Minimate, except obviously it covers the whole figure and not just half of it. The Paint apps are nicely done all over the figure, with the slight exception of the ears on the hairpiece which are slightly blotchy.

Peter Parker has two unique accessories. The first is his backpack, which looks really smart and fits well on him, although it multiplies his geek factor considerably. The second is an open book, which doesn’t have anything except blank white pages visible. Some wavy lines to convey writing would have helped, and it doesn’t exactly fit snugly in his hand.

Overall, I am not a huge fan of this figure. I think he looks a bit geekier than he needs to, with the style of clothing, the glasses and the backpack. I know Parker was always portrayed as a nerd, but they seem to have gone overboard here.

Mary Jane

The second figure in the set is Mary Jane, Peter Parker’s love interest.

Mary Jane is the only female Minimate to have an open mouthed smile, and dimples on her face, and that makes her look a lot less alluring than Jean Grey or Electra. The face looks a bit too “busy”, and other Minimates have shown that the simpler approach works best when it comes to the women.

On her upper body, MJ has bare, flesh coloured arms, and a complete “block” of colour as a T-Shirt. When compared to the off the shoulder costume, arm bands and single glove of Elektra or the crop top and gloves combo of Storm, it looks a bit tacky, and has the unfortunate consequence of giving the illusion that she’s very big and bulky, that she’s filling out the entire block. Her main colours are dark blue and purple, and you can see that she has slightly different shades of purple on her lower body, no idea why.

Mary Jane comes with no accessories, although her hairpiece is removable. The hairpiece, like most of the longer haired ones, does impede neck movement on the figure.

Overall, Mary Jane is a nice figure to have, but I don’t think she’s been particularly well executed.
