Star Trek Minimates Wave 4 - Sickbay Dr McCoy and Nurse Chapel

Like a battle damaged USS Enterprise, Star Trek Minimates limped on, refusing to surrender to the inevitable. Wave 4 actually took the bold step of including non-TOS characters and variants. However here's another McCoy, and Nurse Chapel from TOS.

Packaging

It's the standard blister carded pack, the same as in previous waves of the 2" scaled Trek-Mates. This wave has the backing card in dark blue. Both figures are easily viewable within.

The rear of the packaging features a large photo of all the figures in the wave.

The Figures

Sickbay Dr McCoy

It's Dr McCoy as he appeared when on duty in the Enterprise's sickbay.

It's exactly the same McCoy head as used in his original figure in Wave 1. The likeness is great; it's among the best of the Star Trek Minimates so far, however this line now has three McCoy Minimates (as the variant figure in Wave 1 was Dress Uniform McCoy) with exactly the same face and hair and very similar uniforms.

It's hardly exciting is it? The only differences between wave 4 McCoy and wave 1 McCoy are the rounded neck on the shirt top and the inclusion of McCoys hairy forearms. This is lazy, uninspired and insulting.

Sickbay McCoy is accessorised with a communicator and a tricorder. And it's a normal tricorder, not even a medical one! A bit of thought could have given us the removable scanner part of the medical tricorder or maybe one of those pressure injectors that McCoy was so fond of doping people with.

In conclusion: There is no way the line needed another practically identical McCoy so soon, such laziness on DST's part. Yes the core Enterprise crew are important but we got so many of them over and over again in each wave it's no wonder this revamped line never really took off. What should have been a vibrant licence was hampered by rampant over-use of the big three TOS characters.

Nurse Chapel

Ah, this is more like it. A fresh face amongst the many variations of the TOS big three, and a female one too.

Christine Chapel was head nurse aboard the Enterprise 1701 and was played by Majel Barrett, the wife of Gene Roddenberry.

Okay the 'mate doesn't have the greatest likeness - in fact the face could almost be said to be generic female, but a lot of effort has gone into the hairpiece which really does capture the style of Chapel's hair and helps 'sell' the likeness of the character.

Other than that it's another fairly run of the mill Trek-Mate. The only detail to the figure is the scoop neck of the tunic, the very basic chest definition and the gold Starfleet emblem. The skirt is the same as Uhura's though obviously blue, and the feet are very shiny. Under the skirt the T-piece is coloured the same blue as the rest of the uniform.

Chapel is accessorised with a communicator, a tricorder, and a padd - none of which are all that medical. Another wasted opportunity to get some actual sickbay equipment with the figures.

In Conclusion: The character's welcome, but as a figure it's still not all that.
