Star Trek Minimates Wave 4 Variant - Dress Uniform Scotty

Like a battle damaged USS Enterprise, Star Trek Minimates limped on, refusing to surrender to the inevitable. Wave 4 actually took the bold step of including non-TOS characters and variants, and thusly the wave 4 variant is Montgomery Scott in Wrath of Khan-era dress uniform.

Packaging

It's the standard blister carded pack, the same as in previous waves of the 2" scaled Trek-Mates. This wave has the backing card in dark blue. Both figures are easily viewable within and Dress Uniform Scotty is clearly identified as a variant.

The rear of the packaging features a large photo of all the figures in the wave.

The Figure

Dress Uniform Scotty

DST know that when you are stuck for a cool variant, just slap one of the existing figures in a Dress Uniform and be done with it. It worked for wave 1, right? At least we got a visually interesting Duty Uniform Scotty as the main wave figure rather than this one. I couldn't really take another wave 3 fiasco when 2 slots in the wave were taken up with pointless Dress Uniforms. The redeeming factor here of course is that it's the movie-era dress uniform, like Kirk's in this wave.

At least this variant of fat Scotty has a slightly different expression to the regular version. It's quite neutral which I suppose is fair enough, but it's not all that interesting really.

As expected, Dress Uniform Scotty is wearing the same pieces as Admiral Kirk. There's just a slightly different colour scheme, mustard yellow on the undershirt piece and shoulder piping. There are further rank indicators (for that's what they appear to be) in the band on the left wrist and the piping that runs down the legs.

Dress Uniform Scotty has a phaser pistol accessory.

In conclusion: A solid figure if very uninspiring. Really a poor choice of variant.

MMC Score - 7 out of 10

Wave Conclusions: Too little, too late. This should have been the selection for wave 3. Then we might have seen a bit more of a buzz around the Trek-Mates. As it is even the inclusion of Picard and the Borg from TNG couldn't save Star Trek Minimates from one more wave and then indefinite hiatus. As for the choice of variant... I can only assume it was down to cost, but how cool would a variant two pack featuring Locutus of Borg have been?
