Star Trek Minimates Wave 5 Variant - Commander Sisko

And so we come to the final wave (for now at least) of the Star Trek Minimates. A series that started well but was badly let down by poor character choices leading to indifference from even the most hardcore of Minimate collectors. The variant for this wave is Commander Sisko from Deep Space Nine.

Packaging

No great departures in the pack design. A simple blister pack with a head shot of Kirk and Spock on the inlay card. The backing card is a very dark blue. The back of the card features the usual group shot of the figures in this series.

The Figure

Commander Sisko

This is Benjamin Sisko as seen in the first three seasons of Deep Space Nine when his role was more that of a diplomat than the military leader he was fated to become.

Facially the likeness is not really there. Avery Brooks has a fairly high forehead and that just can't be replicated in 'mate form. The only part of the face that could be said to be similar to Brooks is the mouth. Unlike the non-variant Sisko, this figure gets a hairpiece.

Sisko's wearing a later version of the Next Generation-era Starfleet uniform. It's very plain, mainly black with a red flash across the shoulders and tops of the arms. There is a hint on the chest block of a grey undershirt and this shirt continues in a separate collar piece. I believe there should be three gold pips on the collar to denote Sisko's rank but these are missing. The only other hint of colour is the Starfleet combadge which sit on the left of Sisko's chest but is rather lost in all that black.

The forearms have very noticeable marring which looks as though the flashing wasn't removed properly. Remember this is a variant and therefore premium figure.

I've tended to mention the shoes a lot in the course of my Star Trek Minimate reviews, so it's probably worth noting that this 'mate is so dull, so very very dull, that it only has one shiny shoe. Bizarrely the right foot is matte and the left gloss.

The knee on the right leg is incredibly loose, so loose in fact that at first I thought I'd broken it. The 'mate is also suffering from 'left leg lean' I've noticed this a lot with recent Marvel 'mates where the left leg is noticeably shorter than the right making the figure very unstable. Please sort it out DST.

Sisko is accessorised with a 25th century era phaser, the same sidearm as Captain Sisko and Wave 4's Captain Picard.

In conclusion: This variant is dull, it is not needed, and the clincher; it is not very well made. I have to say it's a bit irritating that once again a variant figure, one that fans pay a premium for the privilege of owning, is so bloody mediocre. The regular Sisko's a great Minimate. The variant? Just dull. We should have had Riker, Worf, Kira Nerys! Fandom just isn't crying out for two Sisko's. It's poor assortment decisions like this that helped to kill off the Star Trek Minimates. I hope to see them back at some point in the future and truly hope that by then the necessary lessons will have been learned.
