Today we have a special feature of Know Your Foe Friend. We are going to take a look at the one, the only … Sandman!

Amazing_Spider-Man_Vol_1_4

He first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #4 in 1963.  His back-story has really fleshed out over the years. He was born William Baker but would eventually use the alias Flint Marko when he turned to a life of crime. Flint’s power came to be when he escaped from prison and came into contact with irradiated sand at a nuclear testing site. He has the ability to transform his body, harden parts into weapons and manipulate other sand and rock particles. Flint has also gone from criminal to mercenary to Spider-Man’s ally, even for a brief time he was a part of the Avengers and eventually full circle back to a criminal.

He has been released in minimate form several times with the first in Marvel wave 10 with a Silver Sable. This version was rather basic but nailed his classic look and had a great (at the time) elongated sand arm. He appeared again in the Spider-Man 5 pack.  This figure was very inconsistent with a bunch of different techniques that if they would have been consistent would have looked really good. Then for the Spider-Man 3 movie we got a pair of impressive movie related figures for wave 17 and wave 18. It looks like the best is yet to come; in the Deadly Foes of Spider-Man box set we are getting all the best pieces from the figures released so far done in classic comic colors.

If we were to see another version of Sandman down the line I would like to see them revisit a semi-translucent version. I’d like to see a figure similar to wave 18 with him powered up with translucent plastic and use the sand wash they attempted for part of the Spider-Man 5 pack figure. Also alternate torso pieces with a hole punched through it, parts missing or blown all apart (like T-1000) would be cool additions.

We’ll definitely have a review of the new box set with the Sandman figure in the days to come. Stay tuned for more Spidey Foes and check out Luke’s Toy Store to preorder your Deadly Foes of Spider-Man box set!
