We’re back for another round of Know Your Foe. Today we’re taking another look at another scary Spidey foe …. Hobgoblin!
Hobgoblin is another character where several people have worn the mask over the years. The first incarnation had Roderick Kingsley under the hood and appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #238 in 1983. His superhuman powers come from the same Goblin serum that turned Norman Osborn into the Green Goblin. So obviously he’s very similar in weaponry to past Goblins and in later incarnations he gets a demonic upgrade.
He was released in an exclusive set for Suncoast/FYE with Scarlet Spider-Man which made this set a bit more difficult to acquire. He still looks pretty good. His face is outstanding, even by today’s standards. I still like his cape and hood; they used good sculpts for these pieces. The main thing missing is his glider.
Overall he could go for an update. If you track how the Green Goblin figures have improved over the years then you can see the potential for Hobgoblin. First up, give the man a glider with blast base; all they have to do is reuse the Goblin Gliders. Next go with the updated buccaneer boots, cuffs and the latest fashion in satchel wear. They could keep the scales on his legs and arms but better torso detail is needed along with an updated hood and cape. His face and pumpkin bomb hand are already perfect.
His MMC score was a 7 and I’d probably grade him lower today since we’ve seen better Goblin attire and included accessories. Stay tuned for more Spidey Foes and check out Luke’s Toy Store to preorder your Deadly Foes of Spider-Man box set!
