Another set from the Avengers wave, again featuring characters that have been requested many times in the past. This pack contains Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, reformed members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and offspring of uber bad-guy Magneto as well.

Packaging

Like the rest of the wave the figures are boxed in the new style peg-hanging package. The box is decorated very garishly and certainly hits the eye. Or rather assaults the eye with twin nun-chucks that have nails through the ends. It’s very, very bright. There are photos on the front of the box depicting the figures in signature action poses. Unfortunately the pictures are only from the waist up so a lot of the impact is lost, particularly in Quicksilver’s case.

As with wave 14 the back of the packaging is new and shows a large picture of all the figures in the wave including the variant.

The Figures

Scarlet Witch

ScarletWitch3

The first Minimate in this set is Wanda Maximoff: The Scarlet Witch. A mutant with the power to alter probability with her hex bolts. Although for many years Wanda was well regarded as a key member of The Avengers, she’s recently fallen out of favour thanks to three magic words that spawned the House of M miniseries (“No More Mutants”, for those not in the know).

The face has been captured well. Nice big eyes and a simple mouth. The face is accented by Wanda’s headpiece, which really sells that this is the Scarlet Witch.

ScarletWitch4 ScarletWitch2

The body is well decorated. Wanda’s classic look is fairly simple and straightforward and AA/DST have pulled it off well. Paint lines on legs and arms are straight and don’t suffer any bleed-over. The cape looks to be a new piece, surprising considering the amount of generic capes AA/DST have available by now. It’s a nice touch.

ScarletWitch1

Scarlet Witch comes with a ‘Hex Bolt’ that fits over her hand. It looks to be a re-use of the Iron-Fist ‘Chi’ piece. No cause for complaint though as it only helps to accentuate the figure. Wanda also has C3 feet and a peg hole in the head.

Overall, a nicely realised Minimate. Sometimes simplicity is best.

Quicksilver

Quicksilver1

Currently in the Marvel Universe Pietro Maximoff is about as unpopular as his sister. She’s responsible for a distinct lack of mutants; he’s responsible for causing huge enmity between the hidden race known as the Inhumans and the rest of the Marvel Universe. This figure harks back to happier times when like his sister he was a core member of the Avengers.

Quicksilver2 Quicksilver4

The likeness to the character isn’t too bad. Perhaps more of a sneer would have helped to really nail Pietro. As it is he looks arrogant enough, just not as arrogant as Quicksilver should. The white hairpiece looks to be a re-use of Wolverine’s from wave 3 (Ultimate X-Men) but it’s not exactly the same so I can’t determine if it’s a new piece or not? The hair is a slight let down. In my opinion it should be slimmer at the temples, which would have given a more streamlined look.

The body is great. Like Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver’s costume is fairly basic, but at this scale it would be very easy to get wrong and AA/DST have done a bang up job here. The lines of the lightning motif are crisp and clear, just as importantly they continue along the side of the figures chest piece and around to the back too. Hopefully this is an indication AA/DST have decided not to continue their policy of only decorating the front of figures that we saw so much of with waves 12 and 13.

Quicksilver3

There’s some very minor paint bleed on the white ‘boot’ part of the legs but that’s a very minor criticism.

Quicksilver comes with no accessories. No big deal as he’s a super speedster and doesn’t need accessories. He has C3 feet and a peg hole in his head.

Overall, despite being another shining example of less being more, the hairpiece lets the final score down a tad.
