Wave 1 contained some DC heavy hitters (Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Joker) and wave 2 seems to be consolidating the ranks with some second tier characters. This review features Dr. Fate and Power Girl.

After Playalong/Art Asylum’s “Minimates with building blocks” attempts in the ill-fated C3 range, DC Direct decided to snap up the licence, bringing us 2-packs of Minimates a la Marvel, but with no chase figures.

Packaging

The packaging style for this wave is the same as the first, which is no bad thing as it was good, simple packaging which showed off the figures and accessories effectively. The Minimate’d picture is of Batman, which is slightly strange as he doesn’t actually feature in this wave! I guess DCD had shot themselves in the foot giving Superman the pic in the first wave. The figures are held into the back tray of the blister by twist ties.

The back of the card shows off the rest of the wave. I’d’ve liked to see some small bios incorporated like the newer Marvel sets.

The Figures

Dr. Fate

Dr Fate is a sorceror, using the mystical helmet of Nabu. There have been many different Dr Fates in DC’s very complex continuity/timeline but the costume has remained very similar throuout the years.

Dr Fate has a sculpted helmet (no sniggering at the back). It’s not flush against the face, the bottom is wider than the head piece. It even has sculpted ears poking out of the sides. Perhaps some black outlines to separate the very comic-booky white eyes from the yellow helmet would have been nice, but it’s still good. The helmet is removable, and reveals a superbly detailed face. Dr Fate has one of the best goatees yet seen on a Minimate (although I think he only has Tony Stark as competition). He also gets a white hairpiece to use when the helmet’s off.

The body is quite simply detailed. He is dark blue and bright yellow (similar to this wave’s Booster Gold), which means the yellow paint over the blue can sometimes be a tad uneven, like on his yellow “trunks”. Where it is separated with a black outline, the paint is good, as seen on his nicely detailed boots. The chest detailing is very good. Like most of the DC Minimates, his muscular detailing is thick and prominent. He has a big yellow collar piece which is the mantle for his cape. The cape itself is flaring out rather than curled around the body like most caped Minimates. This makes Dr Fate look quite distinctive.

I mentioned before that Dr. Fate came with a white hairpiece. He also has C3 feet and a hole in the head block for the helmet/hairpiece peg to secure.

Overall, Dr Fate is well executed in the Minimate style.

Power Girl

Power Girl, Kara Zor-L, is Earth-Two’s version of Supergirl. Also known as Karen Starr, she possesses all the powers befitting someone from Krypton, along with fantastic breasts.

Oh yes, I had to review Power Girl, regular readers will know why. But let’s start with her face. The style of this Minimate is simple and not overdone, with her big blue eyes and a slight smirk on her red lips. The hairpiece is a nicely sculpted blonde bob, giving Power Girl a very appealing look.

Power Girl is famous for her, uh, main attributes. In a first for female Minimates, Power Girl actually gets a “powerhouse” chest piece to emphasise her upper body bulk. This works pretty well to show off her size but it would still have been nice to get a “cropped” powerhouse chest piece that just made the upper part of her chest bigger. Anyway, what we do have is very nicely detailed, with the trademark hole in her white leotard showing off a most impressive cleavage, and the detailing on her buxom bosoms and abs showing why she’s known as Power Girl. The chest piece also has her red cape on it, with her asymmetrical gold mantle sculpted on. Her cape is shorter than most but it still looks great.

The paint on this Minimate isn’t bad, but again, the “trunks” part of the upper thighs is quite sloppy, with the white leotard and pink skin not being very well defined. Power Girl has no accessories, but has C3 feet and pegged hair.

Overall this Minimate is boldy sassy and is a winner in my book.
